The Benefits of Spaying and Neutering

An unaltered Female in heat will spray, urinate and defecate in inappropriate places, vocalize loudly all hours of the night and day, and often attract noisy, bothersome males. Females that have heat cycles with out being bred are prone to Pyometra. The two main hormones produced by the ovaries are estrogen and progesterone. An excessive quantity of progesterone, or the uterus becoming oversensitive to it, causes pyometra. Toxicity develops very quickly in cats with pyometra. Treatment is a complete ovariohysterectomy. This removes the ovaries, oviducts, uterus, and all associated blood vessels. If not caught in time then death of the animal. The best prevention of pyometra is to have female cat spayed around 8 months of age.

Pregnant females eat considerably more both when pregnant and while caring for their offspring. Raising kittens is expensive and time consuming. Placing them in good homes involves feeding, caring, vaccinating, advertising and interviewing potential families.

Altered (Neutered) Male cats are less likely to suffer disorders in their reproductive glands, conditions that can lead to kidney disease. They too vocalize loudly all hours of the night and day. Unaltered male cats typically spray urine and urinate on anything and everything to mark territory inside and outside the home. This spray has a distinct, obnoxious odor. Neutering around 8 months of age helps eliminate this problem.
